Notes and Editorial Reviews

Review by James Manheim
The music of Joaquín Turina takes second place in the public imagination to that of his near contemporary Manuel de Falla partly because of the lack in his output of a certifiable blockbuster (although La Oración del Torero comes close) but also because of a certain restraint in his music, which can pass you by if you're not paying attention. This elegant collection of piano pieces, originally released in 1995, should win a few converts. Turina was a pianist himself, and the inclusion of the orchestral Danzas fantásticas, Op. 22, of 1919, is justified on the basis of the fact that the composer himself admitted he wrote the work at the piano and then orchestrated it. The music marries dense, oblique impressionistic textures with blazing Andalusian melodies and rhythms -- an addictive combination if you let yourself partake. Spanish sounds flavor the music fully, but never overwhelm; even the vigorous zapateado dance in Turina's hands emphasizes grace over noise -- sample the zapateado from the Tres danzas andaluzas, Op. 8 (track 3). Pianist Albert Guinovart is equipped for the technical challenges of Turina's music, and he catches its elegant, sometimes almost seductive quality beautifully. The potential buyer of this disc, however, might conclude that Turina's output for piano consisted almost entirely of Spanish dances -- the album offers all dances of one kind or another until the concluding Concierto sin orquesta, Op. 88, a not especially compelling late work. In fact, Turina wrote various other kinds of piano music, much of it programmatic, and some of that in a distinctively witty vein. A more varied program might have come closer to delivering the single-disc survey the title "Works for Piano" seems to suggest, but the music included does offer the perfect soundtrack for a low-key Spanish afternoon.
