Notes and Editorial Reviews

"The performances from Patrick Cohen and his string colleagues are technically assured (string intonation well-nigh perfect throughout) and strongly characterized, with a wide spectrum of tone colour and dynamics; and the relatively light sonorities of period instruments make for consistently lucid textures, though the cellist, Christophe Coin, is not afraid to dig the bow deep into the string at climaxes. No. 21 strikes me as particularly successful, with expressive timing and shaping from the keyboard in the slow movement and a robust pungent reading of the finale, I also relished the purity of Erich Hobarth's line and the delicacy of interplay between violin and keyboard in the Adagio of No. 23, and the wittily pointed cross-rhythms of the finale.

Anyone who wants to investigate three marvellous, little-known pieces from Haydn's ripest period should find much pleasure in the considered, stimulating readings from Cohen and his colleagues, vividly if a bit closely recorded."

-- Richard Wigmore, Gramophone [9/1993] Review of earlier release of this recording

Rezensionen

FonoForum 8 / 1993: »Besonders die langsamen Sätze leben von einer erstaunlichen Innenspannung, atmen Ruhe und lassen die differenziert abgestuften Klangfarben in ungewöhnlichem Reichtum aufleuchten.«
