Let’s start with the top of the range Christmas singers who, with their voice and personnality, have managed to embody this key moment of the year. We are obviously talking about the American crooners who made the most of the season to publish Christmas singles or compilations. Let’s be honest, these albums are also an incredible source of income for record companies which do not hesitate to propose re-issues every year. The single White Christmas by Bing Crosby remains the best selling single in history with more than 50 million copies sold.
Christmas is a source of inspiration for a lot of musicians and Jazz music also has its CDs and LPs of the season. In 1960, Peggy Lee sang Christmas in a carrousel. Louis Armstrong recorded several Christmas singles. In 1965, Vince Guaraldi Trio composed Charlie Brown and the Peanuts Christmas theme after a request from Coca Cola Company.
Jimmy McGriff and his friend Jimmy Smith, both very skilled at the Hammond organ, offered us Christmas With McGriff in 1963 and Christmas 64. The queen of Jazz, Ella Fitzgerald, sang Christmas in 1967.
Tony Bennett recorded his Christmas album in 1968. Kenny G, a Smooth Jazz saxophonist, presented his Miracle for Christmas in 1994. Oscar Peterson played Christmas in 1995 on a piano jazz. In 2008, Aretha Franklin issued a compilation dedicated to Christmas This Christmas Aretha. Chilly Gonzales wished us all A very chilly christmas on his album from 2020.
Christmas albums by genre
Christmas was performed in a Soul Funk version. In 1957, Frankie Lymon recorded a Christmas single. Christmas on the beach with the Beach Boys band and their album in 1964 for a new Christmas style. In 1965, The Ventures, a instrumental rock band, proposed us an LP with new covers of Christmas classics enlivened with their success riffs from the mid 60s. In 1969 Jimi Hendrix electrified Little Drummer Boy and Auld lang Syne that were released in 1999 on Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Gangsta rap music also has its Christmas compilation, published by Death Row records with Christmas on Death Row released in 1996.

Along with these very popular singers from the other side of the Atlantic, you’ll also find international artists with different sensitivities who sing Christmas their own way. In 1946, Tino Rossi and his Petit Papa Noël remained in music lovers’ heart for many years and is still the best-selling single in France with 5,7 million copies sold. Charles Aznavour, often seen as the French Sinatra sang Christmas in Paris. The gipsy kings, offered us their own version on Sorpresa de Navidad.
Boney M., a German pop disco band from the 80s, danced Christmas on Disco mode.
In Canada, Celine Dion released her 6th album 100% in English These Are Special Times.
Jose Feliciano, a Porto-Rican blind artist produced Feliz Navidad, which track Feliz Navidad since it was published in 1970, has regularly stood amongst the 100 most popular songs by BillBoard magazine.
Yomo Toro, another Porto-Rican artist, adapted Jingle Bells on a compilation dedicated to Christmas around the world.
In the same category La Chola Zenida sang Jingle Bells with a mexican spicy flavor. The Brazilian artist Joao Gilberto also sang Christmas for his country on his album Présenté de Natal.
Herléo Muntu described Christmas time in Africa where people are «drunk with sun and rainstorms at the pace of tum-tums ». Soukoue Ko Ou from Haïti sang a Christmas in West IndiesNoël aux Antilles.
The Reggae record company Trojan published several Christmas singles in Reggae mode compiled on Trojan: this is Christmas.
