Coconuts disk, Ikebukuro

The Coconuts disk store in Ikebukuro is one of the 4 shops of the company “Coconuts Disk” (the 3 others are located in Ekoda, Kichijoji and Yoyogi).
We had a good chat with Satomura-san who explained the various activity of this very active company : not only do they sell used records, but they have nice textile products, some dvds and books (most of them related to music).


They have about 15 000 records in catalog, all genres but with a big focus on Japanese oldies from the 50's and 60's.
As many shops in Japan, they do not travel abroad to buys records, but they rely on a extensive networks of clients of contacts to have access to interesting products.
Their website, although not in English, is definitely worth checking : the design is quite original and they have separated blogs for each store, presenting their latest arrivals and giving insights about the records. And they do sell on line (but again, in Japanese...).
Some interesting anecdotes about Coconuts Disk ? This one : The Kichijoji shop was one of the main setting for the movie “The fish story” (by director Yoshihiro Nakamura, based on the novel by Kotaro Izaka, 2009).
And another one (I like this one...) : they have one rare piece of a test press vinyl of “Beatbop” by the NY performance artist Rammellzee that was handmade designed by Jean-Michel Basquiat. Cool, no ? (but this one is not on sale...).
