Il supergruppo psichedelico ideato da Dave Alvin e comprendente Jesse Sykes, David Immerglück, Victor Krummenacher e Michael Jerome pubblica un supplemento all'ultimo album di studio "Right Now!": "Spellbinder!" è un EP di quattro brani che da quel disco riprende tre titoli, uno solo dei quali (la cover di "Reap What You Sow" di Otis Rush) nella stessa versione. "Darkness, Darkness" degli Youngbloods e "The Creator Has A Master Plan" del cantante jazz Leon Thomas sono remixati dal celebre fonico Tchad Blake, che si occupa anche del missaggio di una inedita reinterpretazione di "Spellbinder" del chitarrista jazz ungherese Gábor Szabó, idolo di Immerglück. Completa il programma una versione di "Before We Said Goodbye" riarrangiata per archi, che trasforma un pezzo concepito come "una combinazione tra Haight-Ashbury e una ballata r&b" in un brano "che evoca Marvin Gaye o i Chi-Lites", spiega Alvin sottolineando che mentre i due album precedenti erano basati principalmente sulle canzoni "Spellbinder" riporta la band al concetto originale di musica sostanzialmente improvvisata.

The psychedelic supergroup conceived by Dave Alvin—featuring Jesse Sykes, David Immerglück, Victor Krummenacher, and Michael Jerome—is releasing a supplement to their latest studio album, "Right Now!" titled "Spellbinder!". This four-track EP revisits three titles from that record, only one of which (the cover of Otis Rush's "Reap What You Sow") appears in the same version. "Darkness, Darkness" by The Youngbloods and "The Creator Has A Master Plan" by jazz singer Leon Thomas have been remixed by the renowned engineer Tchad Blake, who also handled the mixing for a previously unreleased interpretation of "Spellbinder" by Hungarian jazz guitarist Gábor Szabó, a hero of Immerglück's. Completing the tracklist is a version of "Before We Said Goodbye" rearranged for strings, which transforms a piece originally conceived as "a combination of Haight-Ashbury and an R&B ballad" into a track "that evokes Marvin Gaye or the Chi-Lites," as Alvin explains. He emphasizes that while the previous two albums were mainly song-driven, "Spellbinder" returns the band to their original concept of essentially improvised music.
