Anniversaries crown in DG's leading cellist: Mischa Maisky, will be 65 on 10 January 2013; he made his first recording for the label 30 years ago; and he left the-then Soviet Union 40 years ago.
Over the years he's made some great iconic recordings, offering heartfelt, bigger-than-life performances of the central cello repertoire, and developing the concept of a sequence of short pieces in a romantic style and mood. His Meditation album from 1990 is one of DG's all-time best-sellers.

Elgar Concerto, Tchaikovsky Rococo Variations
There's nothing here for Britain's anti-Sinopolites to add to their castigation of this controversial conductor. His and Mischa Maisky's interpretation of Elgar's Cello Concerto is deeply felt and has no idiosyncrasies of tempo. It reinforces Elgar's own description of the piece—'a big work, and I think good and alive'. Maisky's impressive playing of the introductory flourish announces that this will be a big-scale performance and DG have provided him with a beautifully-balanced recording. Soloist and conductor both convey the pathos of the music, but without any glutinous self-pity. Nobility is the order of the day.
Sinopoli's moderato for the first movement is a sensible tempo, and he takes care to bring out—without over-emphasis—the poetic detail in the orchestral accompaniment. Maisky imparts an air of mystery to the opening of the second movement and then gives a mercurial, virtuoso display in which clarity of articulation is paramount (as occasionally it is not in Tortelier's last and very fine recording for RPO Records/Pickwick with Groves). The Adagio is eloquently phrased and the finale, which Sinopoli keeps on the move, is equally fine. In many ways, this performance resembles the Isserlis/Hickox version for Virgin Classics in its avoidance of the sentimentality that disfigures some interpretations.
Maisky also gives a splendid account of Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations. As in the Elgar, the Philharmonia plays with aristocratic refinement, the woodwind solos being especially distinguished, and the recording is again first-class. . . .

Saint-Saëns: Concerto, Sonata, Suite
Mischa Maisky's rich, velvety tone and brilliant technique give all the works here an arresting, memorable quality. The recordings, too, are full and resonant and, in the concerto, the Orpheus players sound as passionately involved as the soloist; the tuttis lose all feeling of formality. (By comparison, the LSO for Isserlis lack intensity.) I was swept along by Maisky's performance until the third movement, where he takes the main theme very slowly, more Andante than Allegro moderato, then speeds up substantially for the virtuoso passages. Both Isserlis, and Fournier, in his fine 1948 recording, show how much more satisfying a performance can be without these extreme tempo variations.
For the Suite, I think I'd prefer Maisky over the Naxos recording with Maria Kliegel, attractive and stylish though that is. Playing and recording are more vivid, with the Molto adagio tempo of the Romance beautifully sustained. Maisky's warmth and verve carry him through the Allegro appassionato and the Op. 36 Romance in fine style, but `Le cygne' is very disappointing — hold-ups (often big ones) on nearly every bar-line destroy the serenity.
Though the Maisky and Isserlis discs contain several of the same pieces, there's a very different emphasis — Isserlis mostly with piano, Maisky with orchestra, so they only come into direct competition for the concerto and the sonata. The performances of the latter are very different, Maisky and Hovora bringing out the music's dark passion, Isserlis and Devoyon stressing classical refinement. I definitely prefer the Isserlis/Devoyon Andante — the different elements come together more persuasively — but for the outer movements it's more difficult to say; you really need to hear both.

Mendelssohn: Cello Sonatas, Variations
Mischa Maisky, whose playing always shows intense involvement, makes a passionate advocate for the Mendelssohn sonatas. With young Venezuelan-born Sergio Tiempo, a pianist able to combine virtuoso brilliance with a flair for pointing the expression of each phrase, Maisky gives notably urgent, dramatic readings of both works.
The Second Sonata's first Allegro bursts in with an enormous energy maintained whenever Mendelssohn's characteristic vigour and emotional intensity demand it. Yet the two more lightweight sonata movements, Op 45's Andante and the Allegretto scherzando in Op 58, achieve real delicacy and elegance. Maisky's highly-charged playing of the recitative in op 58's Adagio seems entirely appropriate to the sense of this wildly uninhibited music, despite one's awareness that no 1840s cellist would have used vibrato like this.
Indeed, I find myself torn between admiration for Maisky's wonderfully vocal way of modulating his tone, so that in the four song arrangements there's no feeling that the lack of words or of the human voice is any sort of deprivation, (the beautiful 'Die Liebende schreibt' is especially haunting), and a longing, in some pieces, for a simpler style of performance. The two Song without Words arrangements, in particular, introduce continual hesitations that impede the music's natural flow. And, in all the short lyrical pieces, Maisky's alluring, but rather flowery tone creates a soft-focus effect that can become cloying. But if I needed convincing of Mendelssohn's stature and range, this disc would certainly do the trick.

Vocalise
In this continuation of his successful series of ‘songs without words' -- songs for voice and piano transcribed for cello and piano -- Mischa Maisky left the Austro-Germanic repertoire he had previously explored behind and turned to the songs of his motherland in this disc of Russian songs called "Vocalise." For fans of Maisky's earlier discs of Schubert, Mendelssohn and Brahms, no more needed to be said: the same sweetly singing tone, the same warm-hearted phrasing, the same vibrato, portamento and glissando that distinguished Maisky's those discs was fully present here. From Glinka's lighthearted "The Lark" to Tchaikovsky's aching "None but the Lonely Heart" to Glazunov's yearning "Desire" to Rachmaninoff's melancholic "Sing Not to Me, Beautiful Maiden," Maisky was as wholly committed to these songs as he was to those of Schubert and his performances with pianist Pavel Gililov were as convincing as could be imagined. While this might not work for those who prefer their songs with words or their cello music abstract, for lovers of cello music who wish the 19th century repertoire contained more short but affecting works by Russian composers, Maisky's disc will be just the thing.
